RELAIS PARCO CAVALONGA
holidays sicily
The Province of Ragusa is the right choice for your holidays in Sicily.
It has a surface area of 1614 square km, with a total population of about
300,000 inhabitants. It is administratively divided into 12 Municipalities.
It is the smallest and youngest of the Sicilian provinces, being established
in 1926. It occupies the south-eastern part of Sicily, and shares the beautiful
landscapes and fascinating history of this area of the island. Ther rocky
coasts, covered of green vegetation from the gulf of Gela, offer exceptional
views on the Ippari valley and the Iblei Mountains.
The town of Modica is among the favorite tourist destinations during holidays
in Sicily after Taormina, fortified by its position over a huge rock on
two gorges where two streams Ianni Mauro and Pozzo dei Pruni (which do not
exist any more today) joined into the Moticano river on the slopes of the
Monti Iblei, dominating the whole Val di Noto. For its southern position
and superb Mediterranean climate, it is renowned for producing the first
vegetables and fruit of the season.
In 1693 it was largely destroyed by an earthquake, and reconstructed almost completely in the Baroque style, which pervades all the palaces and monuments, while the oldest part is rich of small alleys and streets, sided by ancient artisans' shops.
The town consists of a lower part (Modica Bassa) and a higher, more ancient part, Modica Alta, connected through 130-m tall Ponte Guerrieri, one of the highest bridges in Europe. Modica was also the native town of philosopher Tommaso Campanella, and of 20th e century poet Salvatore Quasimodo, who was awarded the Nobel prize in 1959.
Also famous is the unforgettable Modican chocolate, still prepared with an ancient traditional technique.
A 15-minute drive from Relais Parco Cavalonga during your holidays in
Sicily will bring you to numerous golden sandy beaches set in their beautiful
coves. This is one of the last undiscovered parts of Europe where you can
drive from Cavalonga and pick and chose your own “private beach”
– perhaps a different one each day! The closest beach is Kamarina,
which takes its name after the ancient Greek which was built in the area.
Punta Secca is a long beach which has become famous in Italy thanks to the
popular TV serial Commissario Moltalbano (Chief Constable Montalbano).
A slightly longer drive will allow you to enjoy the beaches of Irmino Oasis.
Marina di Ragusa, 40 minutes drive from Cavalonga, is the best known beach
resort of the area with a lively night life. Currently the construction
of a harbor for sailing and motor boats is being terminated.
From Pozzallo Harbour, 52 km from Cavalonga, you can take a daily hydrofoil
to Malta during the Summer season.
